CAE Use of English Part 1 // Cambridge English: Advanced Use of English Part 1 [C1] How to pass the CAE Use of English Part 1 1. Don’t just describe the pictures In this part of the Speaking test, you look at three photographs and choose two to speak about. Your task is to compare the two photos and answer the questions about them. It’s tempting to describe the pictures in detail as that’s quite common in speaking exams … but not in Cambridge Advanced! Instead, you need to describe the similarities and differences between the photos. If you spend too much time telling the examiner what you see in the photos, you won’t have enough time to make comparisons and answer the examiner’s questions. For your turn, you speak for one minute. It’s suggested you spend half the time comparing the pictures and the other half answering the questions. Let’s look at an example for the CAE reading and use of English part 1 How might the people be feeling? Why might they be in these situations? In the CAE Use of English Part 1 exam, you could say: In the first picture there appears to be a person hiking in extremely hot, dry conditions like in the desert or a canyon whereas in the second picture the person looks to be ski touring in some snowy mountains. In picture one, they might be feeling boiling hot on account of the weather while in picture two they must be freezing cold! In both pictures I suppose the people are feeling exhilarated by the activities that they are doing. ‘Whereas’, ‘while’ and ‘both’ are magic words that you can – and should! – use for comparing your two chosen photos. Take care! The answer above is a good start, but it’s not complete. It would only take about 40 seconds and only answers one of the questions asked. The examiner wants to hear whether you can talk at length (for the full 60 seconds) and develop answers to both questions. You could go on to say: I suppose they are in these situations because they wanted to get away from it all. Maybe they felt like getting some exercise. Or perhaps they were looking to clear their minds while spending time alone in nature. I think in both cases the activities look quite challenging so the people could be looking for adventure. Test takeaway: In the Speaking test, you’ll be graded on how relevant what you say is to the task. So, stick to the topic if you a better mark! 2. Be ready to speculate in the CAE Use of English Part 1 For the most part, there are no right or wrong answers in the Speaking test. The examiner doesn’t expect you to be an expert on the topic being discussed. Instead, they will assess you on how well you can express your ideas and opinions about that topic. In other words, the focus is less on what you say, and more on how you say it. That’s why it’s important that you practise speculating as you prepare for your exam. Let’s look at an example: Do you know what the man is doing? I, for one, have no idea! In the exam, you could say: It’s difficult to know what he’s doing up there. Perhaps he’s a hunter so he’s looking out for wild animals or he might just be relaxing in a strange spot… ‘Perhaps’ and ‘might’ are two examples of speculative language. CAE Use of English Part 4 // Cambridge English: Advanced Use of English Part 4 [C1] How to pass CAE Use of English Part 4 Part 4 of the Advanced Reading and Use of English exam is the key word transformation. There are six questions in part 4 and for each question you’re given a sentence and a keyword. You’re also given the beginning and end of a second sentence. Your job is to complete the second sentence so that it has a similar meaning to the first one. You must use the keyword you’ve been given, which can’t be changed in any way, and you can only write between three and six words. What did I just read?! Don’t worry, the task sounds more complicated than it is. Let’s take a look at an example to help clear things up. Whatever happens, he will never trust her again. ever Under _ trust her again. Have a think about how we can complete the sentence so that it has a very similar, if not identical, meaning to the original. Any ideas? Well, for the first part of the sentence we can use the expression ‘under no circumstances’. Then, in the second part of the sentence we need to use inversion (that means switching the word order of the subject and verb) and change ‘never’ to ‘ever’. So, the answer is: Under no circumstances will he ever trust her again. Lots of people get very stressed about part 4 and there’s no doubt it is tricky, but I want to help you by drawing your attention to some of the different type of things they are testing in this part of the exam to hopefully reduce your anxiety and improve your performance! 1. DEPENDENT PREPOSITIONS Maybe you remember our blog on Advanced Reading and Use of English part 2, where we talked about dependent prepositions. Don’t recall? No worries. A dependent preposition is a preposition that we always use with a particular verb, noun or adjective. For example: We reached the top of the mountain and marvelled at the amazing views in every direction (verb + dependent preposition) Having a good knowledge of dependent prepositions is so important in part 4. Many of the sentences that you’ll need to complete require the use of nouns, verbs and adjectives that have dependent prepositions. Even if you get the rest of the sentence right, using the wrong preposition will mean that you only get one mark out of the two marks available for each question. So, review those dependent prepositions in order not to throw marks away in part 4! Now it’s time to test yourself. Look at these three sentences. Can you fill in the gaps with the right preposition? (Answers at the end of the post) 1. The man, aged 49, has been accused _ fraud, and faces up to 10 years in prison. 2. Gareth must be prone _ catching colds. He always seems to have a runny nose and a cough. 3. CAE Use of English Part 3 // Cambridge English: Advanced Use of English Part 3 [C1] How to pass the CAE Use of English Part 3 Part 3 of the Advanced Use of English is the ‘Word Formation’ task. In this activity, you’re once again given a text with eight missing words. However, unlike in Part 2, for each of the eight gaps you are given a ’stem’ word that you have to transform to find the correct answer. You need to read the sentence (and wider text) carefully in order to work out which part of speech is required. For example, you could be given the stem word ‘signify’ (a verb), and need to come up with the adverb ‘significantly’, as in this example: The upper layers of Earth’s oceans have cooled over the past two years, even though the planet as a whole is warming up. SIGNIFY REVIEW COMMON SUFFIXES in the CAE Use of English Part 3 He’s such a gorgeous, adorable dog! In part 3, if you’re lucky the answer might come to you straightaway, but you can’t rely on luck. You need a strategy for what to do if the answer doesn’t magically strike you. That’s why it’s really important to have a good knowledge of affixes. That’s the collective name for prefixes and suffixes: a group of letters that we add to the beginning (prefixes) or ends (suffixes) of words to either change their meaning or their part of speech. Let’s look at suffixes first: Education, infection, action, competition – these four nouns all share the same common suffix: ‘-tion’. Joyful, meaningful, hopeful, revengeful – in this case the adjective suffix is ‘-ful’. Communicate, generate, illustrate, demonstrate – these four verbs share the same suffix: ‘-ate’. So how does knowing about suffixes help you in part 3? Imagine that through the context of the sentence you’ve worked out that the missing word must be a noun, but you don’t know the noun of this particular stem word… If you know the typical noun suffixes, you can run through them and see if any of them jog your memory (= make you remember). It might be enough to remind you. Or if not, then at least you can make an educated guess. So now it’s time to test yourself for the CAE use of English Part 3 Look at these common suffixes and decide which part of speech they’re usually associated with (answers at the end of the post): -ism -ive -ful -ship -ly -ese -able -ous -icy -ise -ness -ally -hood -en -sion Takeaway: If your Advanced exam is coming up soon, you’re limited in how much you’ll be able to expand your vocabulary. Maximise your chances by focusing on frequently occurring suffixes for each of the four main parts of speech. CONSIDER IF YOU NEED A NEGATIVE PREFIX Isobel is disaffected and unfulfilled in her work. So you’re au fait (= familiar) with frequently used suffixes and how to change from noun to adjective etc. The next thing you need to consider is that the missing word will sometimes have a negative/opposite meaning.
