Hours after a powerful earthquake struck Morocco – the scale of widespread devastation is now emerging. The US Geological Survey says the epicentre was in the Atlas Mountains, some 70 kilometres (43 miles) southwest of Marrakesh. The quake was also felt as far away as the coastal cities of Rabat, Casablanca and Essaouira. Marrakesh is the closest major city to the epicentre of the quake. A private plane has crashed in Moscow’s Tver region, killing all 10 people on board. Russia news agency TASS reports that Wagner mercenary group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin was among those on board. “A private Embraer Legacy aircraft travelling from Moscow to Saint Petersburg crashed near the village of Kuzhenkino in the Tver Region. There were 10 people on board, including 3 crew members. According to preliminary information, all those on board died,” the ministry for emergency situation said on Telegram. Daniel Hawkins, a journalist in Moscow, told Al Jazeera that “reports in the Russian media, unconfirmed so far, are saying this aircraft could have been taken down by air defence systems”. On a stormy night in July 2005, South Sudanese rebel-leader-turned-Vice-President John Garang de Mabior was flying back to Sudan after a two-day visit to his longtime friend, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda. An hour into the journey, his helicopter crashed in a remote mountain area, killing everyone on board. Air crash investigators concluded that bad weather and pilot error were the likely causes, but a range of theories have since emerged. 45-year-old Hardeep Singh Nijjar left India for Canada in 1997 and became a prominent Sikh leader in the province of British Columbia He publicly campaigned for Khalistan, the creation of an independent Sikh homeland in the Punjab region of India. Just this year, Nijjar was working on an un-official worldwide vote by Sikhs on whether they support separating from India. The recording of a 911 emergency call requesting an ambulance for an American military pilot who parachuted into a man’s backyard in South Carolina has emerged. The interior ministry of eastern Libya’s administration says the death toll has risen to at least 5,200 people, particularly in the city of Derna. Aid agencies have so far provided lower figures but warn the number of victims could sharply rise as thousands remain unaccounted. The United Nations says emergency teams are being mobilised to help on the ground in the politically divided country. Red Cross official Tamer Ramadan says about 10,000 people are missing after the floods. He warns the death toll is “huge” and expected to rise by thousands in the coming days. Funerals are being held in the occupied West Bank after Israeli forces killed at least four Palestinians. Thirty others were also injured, when Israel launched an assault on the Jenin refugee camp.
